A consistent surface plus an attractant to teach puppies and rescues where to go — great for busy or rainy days.
The big question for a small potty area is simple: where does the liquid go? It depends on the surface. In the yard we drain straight into an in-ground base; on a patio or balcony we build a drainage base panel or tray under the turf so liquid still passes through — then rinse away. Here's both cutaways, side by side.
Every Diamond Field Systems potty patch follows the same drainage-first process — we simply swap the base for hard surfaces. Most small potty areas go in within a single day.
We check the footprint, the surface (yard, patio, or balcony), your dog's size, and access, then send an itemized quote for the potty area.
In the yard we excavate a few inches; on concrete or a balcony we clean, level, and confirm where liquid will drain out.
An in-ground crushed-stone base for yards, or a dimpled drainage base panel or tray for patios, rooftops, and balconies.
We trim the perforated turf to your exact patch, seam any edges, and anchor it so nothing shifts or curls up.
We power-brush antimicrobial infill to fight odor, and can add a potty-training attractant to help your dog find the spot.
We flush the patch, confirm it drains, and walk you through the quick clean routine plus simple potty-training tips.
The right setup depends on where the potty area lives. Here's how we match three approaches to real spaces — compare the base, the footprint, and how it drains before you choose.

Potty areas are almost always under 250 square feet, so they fall in our custom-quoted band with a small-area minimum rather than a flat per-foot rate — most land in the hundreds, not thousands. Pricing covers the base or drainage tray, potty turf, antimicrobial infill, and labor. Anything 251 sq ft and up moves onto our volume rate card ($10–$13/sq ft). Here's how the small-area options compare.
| Potty area | Typical size | Base type | Pricing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balcony potty pad | 10–25 sq ft | Drainage tray | Custom quote |
| Patio potty patch | 25–60 sq ft | Base panel over concrete | Custom quote |
| In-ground potty patch | 50–150 sq ft | Crushed-stone base | Custom quote |
| Rooftop relief area | 40–120 sq ft | Elevated flow panel | Custom quote |
Small potty areas are custom-quoted with a small-area minimum — a fraction of a full backyard install. Access (stairs, elevators, tight balconies), demolition of old surfacing, and haul-away can affect the number. Diamond Field Systems gives a free, itemized quote with no surprises.
Most failed potty patches come down to one thing: the liquid had nowhere to go, so it sat and smelled. We solve drainage first — even on concrete and balconies — then back it with antimicrobial infill and training-friendly details.
In-ground base or drainage tray, we make sure liquid clears the surface fast — the single biggest factor in a potty area that stays fresh.
Every potty install uses antimicrobial infill that targets the bacteria behind ammonia smell — standard on small patches, not an upsell.
Founder-led by Noe Toledo, we set up a consistent surface and optional attractant so your dog learns the spot quickly.

Real reviews from apartment dwellers, condo owners, and homeowners with small potty areas.
★★★★★We're on the 12th floor and our pup couldn't hold it. Diamond built a balcony potty pad with a drainage tray — it rinses clean and there's zero smell. Total game-changer.
★★★★★Our puppy potty-trained on the little patio patch in under two weeks. The attractant they added really helped him learn the spot. Cleaning is a two-minute hose-down.
★★★★★Renting a townhome and didn't want to tear anything up. They laid a patio potty patch over the concrete on a base panel — drains perfectly and it's completely removable.

Read moreSmaller than most people expect. A good rule is roughly 4 square feet per 15 pounds of dog. A small dog is happy with a 10–20 square-foot balcony pad; a medium dog does well with 20–40 square feet; two dogs or a large breed want 50 square feet or more. A consistent, dedicated patch actually trains better than a large open area, so we size it to your dog and space rather than oversizing.
Almost always, and usually quickly. Dogs instinctively return to a surface that feels and smells like grass. We set up a consistent, dedicated spot and can add a potty-training attractant that signals "go here." Take your dog to the patch on a schedule, reward success, and most dogs — including puppies and rescues — learn it within one to two weeks.
Yes — it's one of our most common installs. On concrete, pavers, or a balcony deck we set a dimpled drainage base panel or tray under the turf so liquid still passes through and flows to the existing floor drain or edge. No soil needed. For renters we can build it as a removable pad that leaves the surface untouched.
The turf itself is fully perforated, so liquid drains straight through the backing. Underneath, a drainage base panel or tray creates a small gap between the turf and the concrete, letting liquid run to the balcony's edge or floor drain instead of pooling. A quick rinse pushes everything through, exactly like it would on an in-ground base.
It's about five minutes a week. Scoop solids as you would on real grass, then hose the patch down so liquid drains through. For balconies without a hose bib, a watering can or a spray bottle works. An occasional enzyme or turf-safe deodorizer spray keeps it extra fresh, but the antimicrobial infill does most of the work.
Not when it's built right. Odor comes from urine sitting and bacteria breaking it down — so we drain it away and use antimicrobial infill that resists those bacteria. On a small patch a weekly rinse is plenty. If you want the full science on staying odor-free, see our odor-free turf for dogs page.
Plenty. For a balcony we build a lightweight potty pad on a drainage tray that installs without any demolition and can move with you. For a patio we lay turf over the concrete on a base panel — also removable. Both are lease-friendly, drain to the existing edge or floor drain, and keep your deposit safe. Just check your building's pet and balcony rules first.
